1. How does a corona treater work?
A corona treater uses high-frequency, high-voltage discharge to ionize the air around the electrode, producing low-temperature plasma. Energetic particles bombard the material surface, triggering oxidation and introducing polar groups that raise surface tension (dyne level) and improve adhesion of inks, adhesives and coatings.
2. What is the difference between corona and plasma treatment?
Both rely on plasma to activate surfaces. Corona is best for flat webs such as film, paper and foil in high-speed in-line processing. Plasma (jet-type) suits complex 3D parts and precision components that need flexible treatment.
3. How do I choose the power of a corona treater?
Use this formula: Power (W) = power density × web width (m) × line speed (m/min). For print grade, use 10–20 W/(m²/min); for demanding processes, 20–30. E.g., 1.2 m wide at 150 m/min needs about 3 kW.
4. How much does corona treatment improve ink adhesion on film?
After corona treatment, film surface tension rises from 29–31 mN/m to 38–42 mN/m. Ink adhesion improves markedly and ink rejection can drop below 1%.
5. What maintenance does a corona treater require?
Routine maintenance: clean the electrode and roll regularly, check electrode gap (1.5–3 mm) with a feeler gauge, monitor dyne level with a test pen, and replace worn electrodes and insulators. A full service every quarter is recommended.
6. What materials can a corona treater process?
It can process BOPP, PE, PET, PVC films, as well as paper, aluminum foil, metallized film and nonwoven fabrics. For special substrates, please send samples for testing.
